Anfernee Hardaway
Anfernee (Penny) Hardaway landed on the Orlando Magic after the shocking development in which the Magic landed the no. 1 overall pick for second consecutive year in a row ahead of the 1993 NBA Draft (one year after drafting Shaquille O’Neal no.1 overall). Hardaway donned his Magic hat after the Orlando front office drafted Chris Webber with the no. 1 pick, then traded him to the Golden State Warriors minutes later for the draft rights to Penny plus three additional future picks. It was the ultimate “zag” move which masterfully paired Shaq and Penny in what would become one of the most dynamic young duos in NBA history.
While Penny made the NBA Playoffs with the Magic in only his second NBA season, the Shaq and Penny era was, of course, prematurely cut short with Shaq’s departure to the Los Angelos Lakers. Penny remained in Orlando for seven seasons through the 1998-99 campaign. Penny’s career was, at least in part, derailed by injuries which began while he was still in Orlando. While still productive with the Phoenix Suns and other teams, Penny never regained the top level performance and health that he had during his peak Orlando years.
Like other historically talented players for the Orlando Magic, Penny’s run with Orlando is one of mixed emotions. Of course, the 1994-95 season was the highest of highs with Shaq and Penny leading the Magic to the NBA Finals. Penny is one of handful of Magic players to garner multiple First Team All-NBA honors, and at his peak, he is easily one of the most talented players to ever wear the Magic pinstripes.
In the aftermath of Shaq’s departure, Orlando was Penny’s team. However, in his first season as the lone superstar, Penny dealt with injuries which limited his availability. A coach firing midseason and a first round playoff exit cemented the season as anything but a success in the eyes of the fans. Penny’s remaining time in Orlando was marred by regular injuries. And just like that it was over.
