The 2007-08 season marked a significant chapter in the history of the Seattle SuperSonics, ultimately becoming their final season before relocating to Oklahoma City. The team, coached by P.J. Carlesimo, ended the season with a disappointing 20-62 record, placing them last in the Northwest Division and 14th in the Western Conference.
Rookie sensation Kevin Durant was the highlight of the season, having been selected second overall in the 2007 NBA Draft. Durant averaged 20.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, earning him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Despite Durant’s promising performance, the team struggled to find cohesion and consistency, resulting in their poor record.
The season was overshadowed by off-court issues, particularly the team’s pending relocation. Owner Clay Bennett had purchased the team in 2006, with intentions to move the franchise to Oklahoma City. Despite efforts from local fans and officials to keep the team in Seattle, a legal settlement in July 2008 allowed the move, rebranding the team as the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 2008-09 season.
Throughout the season, the SuperSonics played their home games at KeyArena, drawing an average attendance of 13,355, which was among the lowest in the league. The 2007-08 season is remembered more for its off-court drama and the emergence of Kevin Durant than for on-court successes, marking the end of a 41-year era for the SuperSonics in Seattle.
