New York Knicks 1946-47 Roster and Stats

The 1946-47 season marked the inaugural campaign for the New York Knicks, who were part of the newly formed Basketball Association of America (BAA), which would later merge with the National Basketball League (NBL) to become the NBA. The Knicks were coached by Neil Cohalan and played their home games at Madison Square Garden. Despite being newcomers, the Knicks made an immediate impact in the league with a competitive squad.

The Knicks finished the regular season with a record of 33-27, securing a third-place finish in the Eastern Division. This performance was notable as the league consisted of only 11 teams, making the competition relatively intense. The team was led by standout performers such as Ossie Schectman, who scored the first basket in the BAA’s history, and other key players like Sonny Hertzberg and Stan Stutz, who contributed significantly on both ends of the court.

In the postseason, the Knicks faced the Cleveland Rebels in the Eastern Division Semifinals. They won the series 2-1, advancing to the Eastern Division Finals. However, their playoff run came to an end when they were defeated by the Philadelphia Warriors, the eventual champions, in a 2-0 series sweep. Despite the early exit, the Knicks’ inaugural season was a promising start, laying the foundation for the future of the franchise in professional basketball.

  • Regular Season Record: 33-27
