Boston Celtics 1946-47 Roster and Stats

The 1946-47 season marked the Boston Celtics’ inaugural campaign in the Basketball Association of America (BAA), a precursor to the NBA. The team was part of the league’s inaugural eight-team lineup. Under the guidance of head coach Honey Russell, the Celtics played their home games at the Boston Arena, now known as Matthews Arena.

During their first season, the Celtics struggled to find success on the court, finishing with a record of 22 wins and 38 losses. This record placed them fifth in the Eastern Division, resulting in the team missing the playoffs. The season was characterized by inconsistency, as the Celtics found it challenging to compete against more established teams.

Despite the lackluster performance, the season featured notable players such as Ed Sadowski, who led the team in scoring, averaging 19.4 points per game, a significant achievement in an era when scoring was generally lower than today. Sadowski’s contributions were a bright spot in an otherwise difficult season.

The 1946-47 season laid the groundwork for the Celtics’ future development, as the team built experience and learned valuable lessons that would be crucial in the coming years. While their debut season didn’t yield immediate success, it was the beginning of a journey that would eventually lead the franchise to become one of the most storied teams in basketball history.

  • Regular Season Record: 22-38
  • Playoff Result: Did not make playoffs
