Glen Rice

Miami Heat’s first true star
1995 Three-Point Contest Champion

Glen Rice was the Miami Heat’s first true star, playing a crucial role in the franchise’s early years. Selected fourth overall in the 1989 NBA Draft out of Michigan, Rice joined a young Heat team still finding its identity. Over six seasons in Miami (1989-1995), he developed into one of the league’s premier scorers and a deadly three-point shooter.

Rice’s scoring ability was on full display as he steadily improved each year, averaging over 20 points per game in his final three seasons with the team. His best season with Miami came in 1994-95 when he averaged 22.3 points per game while shooting 41% from three-point range. That year, he set a then-franchise record with a 56-point performance against the Orlando Magic, one of the most memorable games in Heat history.

Despite his offensive brilliance, the Heat struggled to achieve postseason success during his tenure. In 1995, Miami traded Rice to the Charlotte Hornets in a blockbuster deal for Alonzo Mourning, a move that ultimately helped shape the franchise’s future.

Although his time in Miami ended before the team became a contender, Rice remains one of the Heat’s greatest early players, laying the foundation for future success.
