Wilt Chamberlain

Legendary big with near mythical status
4x All-Star
1x Second Team All-NBA
NBA Champion
NBA Finals MVP
No. 13 Retired Jersey

Wilt Chamberlain’s tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers was a defining chapter in both his legendary career and the franchise’s storied history. After dominating the league with the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors and the Philadelphia 76ers, Chamberlain was traded to the Lakers in 1968. Though already a proven champion and statistical marvel — including his iconic 100-point game — Wilt arrived in Los Angeles with a new challenge: delivering a title to a team that had come close but never quite sealed the deal.

With the Lakers, Chamberlain adapted his game. Once a scoring machine, he became more of a team-focused player, emphasizing defense, rebounding, and passing. His ability to dominate the paint and protect the rim made the Lakers a perennial Finals contender. Alongside stars like Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and later Gail Goodrich, Chamberlain played a central role in building one of the most formidable teams of the era.

The pinnacle of Wilt’s Lakers career came in the 1971–72 season. That team, coached by Bill Sharman, won a then-record 33 straight games and finished with a 69–13 record — the best in NBA history at the time. Chamberlain anchored the defense and was named Finals MVP as the Lakers won the NBA championship, finally breaking through after years of near-misses.

Wilt played five seasons in Los Angeles before retiring in 1973. In that time, he averaged 17.7 points and 19.2 rebounds per game for the Lakers. Though his scoring numbers dipped from earlier in his career, his leadership, presence, and willingness to evolve helped solidify the Lakers as a powerhouse.

Wilt Chamberlain’s legacy in Los Angeles is about more than stats — it’s about sacrifice, transformation, and finally bringing a title home to one of basketball’s most iconic franchises.
