The Paolo & Franz Era

Franz Wagner joined the team starting in the 2021-22 season with Paolo Banchero coming a year later. Beginning with Wagner’s first season, the Magic have jumped their win total by double digits each season.

The Vucevic, Gordon, Fournier Era

Magic fans might get a chuckle about the idea of a Vooch, AG, Fournier era, but the reality is that this was the core of a pretty mediocre stretch of Magic basketball. The era kicks off with Vucevic coming over on the Dwight trade and Aaron Gordon joining the team at the start of the 2014-15 season with a high draft pick. While Vooch and Gordon were beloved players by the fans, we saw the potential of this core group top out with uncompetitive first round playoff exits in 2019 and 2020. The Magic front office unloaded this core before the trade deadline during the 2020-21 season paving the way for the rebuild that launched the Franz & Paolo era.

The Dwight Howard Era

With the drafting of Dwight Howard first overall in the 2004 NBA Draft, a new era began in Orlando. Dwight Howard racked up impressive awards and was one of the more dominant players in the NBA during this time. Dwight & Co led the Orlando Magic franchise to its second appearance in the NBA Finals.

The T-Mac (and Grant Hill?) Era

Tracy McGrady came to the Orlando Magic prior to the 2000-01 season along with Grant Hill. While Hill battled injuries during his time with the Magic, the era of Magic basketball was marked by elite scoring by T-Mac and first round playoff exits. This run ended after the tumultuous 2003-04 season in which Doc Rivers was fired early in the season. Tracy McGrady was traded to the Houston Rockets following the 2003-04 season.

The “Heart & Hustle” Team

Spanning just a single season, the “Heart & Hustle” team was known for its scrappy nature and barely missing the NBA playoffs despite a fairly lackluster roster. The team was led by the likes of Darrell Armstrong, Bo Outlaw, Pat Garrity and Corey Maggette.

The Later Penny Years Era

This era unfortunately was marked by the aftermath of the departure of Shaquille O’Neal. While the roster still had pieces from the championship contender roster from years prior such as Penny Hardaway, Nick Anderson and Horace Grant, the absence of the Big Fella and injuries that plagued Penny rattled the team during this period.

The Shaq & Penny Era

Arguably the most exciting time period in Orlando Magic history, the franchise hit lightning in the bottle with one of the most dynamic young duos the league had ever seen in Shaquille O’Neal and Anfernee (Penny) Hardaway. The duo led the team to its first NBA Finals appearance and was one of the most dominant and popular teams during this short, exciting stretch.

A New Franchise

Orlando, Florida gets a NBA basketball team. The team didn’t win much, but the town loved the team and many played such as Nick Anderson became pillars of the franchise for years to come.
