While the 2022-23 Orlando Magic season did not showcase championship level basketball for an entire 82-game season, Magic fans had the opportunity to witness a glimpse of championship potential and the budding young core of the next era of Magic basketball. This season marked the first season in which the dynamic pairing of Franz Wagner (second year) and Paolo Banchero (rookie year) were on the court together as Orlando Magic basketball players.
When fans look back at the 2022-23 season and see a 34-48 regular season record and missing the playoffs, it’s easy to think the year was quite abysmal. Fans that recall the week-to-week progression of this season, however, likely remember it differently. With significant injuries to start the season, the Magic began the year winning only five of the first 25 games. Markelle Fultz broke his toe just before training camp and missed the first 20 games. Cole Anthony was injured five games into the season. Paolo Banchero sprained an ankle and missed eight games. After the 5-20 start, the Magic began getting healthy, found their footing and went 29 and 28 the rest of the way. Yep, the Magic finished at just over .500 basketball for the remaining two-thirds of the season. Something that would be the foundation for a successful 2023-24 season.

This season was, simply put, all about Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero having free reign on the court. The two young versatile wings led the team in scoring with 18.6 and 20.0 points per game, respectively. Other players such as Wendell Carter, Jr., Jalen Suggs, Cole Anthony, Markelle Fultz and even Bol Bol had their moments, but the Magic were anchored by their two young budding superstars.
