Mark Aguirre was the Mavericks’ first true superstar, providing scoring and leadership during the franchise’s early years. Selected first overall in the 1981 NBA Draft, Aguirre immediately gave Dallas a cornerstone. Aguirre was a three-time All-Star in Dallas and led the Mavericks to multiple playoff appearances, highlighted by a trip to the 1988 Western Conference Finals against the Showtime Lakers. While his tenure eventually ended in a trade to Detroit, where he won championships, Aguirre’s contributions helped put Dallas on the NBA map. His offensive firepower gave the young franchise credibility and made the Mavericks competitive far sooner than expected.
