Anfernee Hardaway

Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway joined the Phoenix Suns in 1999 after a high-profile trade from Orlando, pairing with Jason Kidd in what was dubbed the “Backcourt 2000.” The pairing promised fireworks, but injuries derailed the vision. Hardaway, once one of the NBA’s most electrifying guards, was hampered by chronic knee issues that limited his explosiveness and availability. Despite that, he had flashes of brilliance, including strong playoff performances, such as a memorable 41-point game in the 2000 postseason against San Antonio. His size and skill still made him a versatile playmaker when healthy, but his Suns years are largely remembered as a “what if” scenario, given his diminished athleticism compared to his Orlando prime. While he contributed as a veteran presence and secondary scorer, the Hardaway era in Phoenix was brief and unfulfilled, emblematic of a talented roster unable to stay healthy or reach its full potential.
