Tracy McGrady

The most elite scorer in Orlando Magic history
4x All-Star
2x First Team All-NBA
2x Second Team All-NBA
2x Scoring Champion

While Tracy McGrady (“T-Mac”) only played four seasons in Orlando out of his 13 NBA seasons, his mark on Orlando has been significant. This is likely due to the fact that the Orlando Magic received some of T-Mac’s best years, including owning the NBA scoring title for two consecutive years in 2002-03 and 2003-04. T-Mac’s combination of size and scoring ability was uncanny, and his historic numbers only look even better as the NBA world increasingly looks upon statistics through the lens of advanced analytics. Simply put, T-Mac was very good during his peak years, and it’s likely he’d be even better in today’s NBA.

While T-Mac’s playoff success with the Magic is limited, he stands in the top tier of individual accolades as an Orlando Magic player. In addition to the scoring titles, All-NBA recognitions and All-Star team placements, T-Mac has a number of Orlando Magic records including the most points in a single game in Magic history (62 points on March 10, 2004 vs. the Washington Wizards). The elite scorer also sits atop the list for most points in a season for an Orlando Magic player (2407 in 2002-03).

Tracy McGrady’s Career Outside Orlando

T-Mac started his career with three seasons with the Toronto Raptors (1997-2000). While McGrady’s capabilities were evident early, his minutes and scoring prowess grew with each of these early seasons. While T-Mac averaged 15.4 points per game during his last season in Toronto, his averages took a major leap once arriving in Orlando (26.8 ppg his first season in Orlando in 2000-01).

Following his four Orlando seasons, Tracy McGrady spent 5+ seasons in Houston before a move to New York. He then spent a year with Detroit and Atlanta each. In 2023, McGrady signed with the San Antonio Spurs just in time to make the playoff roster. He did not log any playing time for the Spurs in the regular season, but averaged 5.2 minutes per game in six games during the NBA Playoffs.

McGrady played 938 regular season games across fifteen NBA seasons. He was named to the All-Star team seven times. His years in Orlando represent arguably the peak of his abilities with two scoring titles in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, however T-Mac remained quite productive for a number of years in Houston throughout the late 2000s.

Other than his minimal presence on the Spurs during the 2013 NBA Playoffs, Tracy McGrady notably never made it past the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
