Favorite Game

January 5, 2024 against the Denver Nuggets, the Orlando Magic won a close game by a score of 122-120. With only eight healthy players available, the Magic came back from 18 points down led by Paolo Banchero who put up a 32 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists and 3 steals. This state line had only be done by six players in NBA history: Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Steph Curry and Luka Doncic. Pretty good company. Oh, and Jalen Suggs hit seven 3-pointers on his way to a career high 27 points. This game was soemthin’ else.

Favorite Moment

That’s an easy one. Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony doing their best impression of the iconic Lebron James and Dwyane Wade Miami Heat photo during an alley-oop dunk against the Washington Wizards on November 29, 2023. Not only was this an incredible play, but the moment truly crystalized the notion that this group – in no small part, led by crowd favorites Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony – brought back the excitement and the crowds to the Magic home court. Something not truly seen in probably over a decade.

Orlando Magic in the 2023 NBA Cup

The Orlando Magic were a part of the inaugural NBA Cup (also called the in-season tournament during the 2023 season) as part of the following group of Eastern Conference teams: Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls. While the Magic went 3-1 with a point differential of +22 during the group stage, it was not enough to proceed to the knockout stage. The Boston Celtics also had a 3-1 record, but a higher point differential of +27, therefore the Celtics won the group. The Orlando Magic also did not earn the single wild card spot because the New York Knicks had a 3-1 record and +42 point differential.

Orlando Magic in the 2024 NBA Playoffs

The Magic advanced to the NBA Playoffs following the 2023-24 NBA season for the first time since the 2020 NBA Playoffs. This was also the first time that the core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and co. made the playoffs. While the young Magic team was inexperienced, they took a talented Cleveland team to a full seven games before getting eliminated with a first round exit. The playoff experience for the young core was invaluable and part of the development of the group.

Despite a disappointing first two games in Cleveland in which a struggling Magic offense failed to eclipse 90 points in either game, the Magic rebounded with two dominant games at home in games 3 and 4 with large margins of victory. With the series tied 2-2, the Magic dropped a pivotal game 5 by a score of 104-103. Despite losing the game 5, Paolo Banchero scored 39 points and put the league on notice that he had arrived. Moreover, the team showed their resilience in battling back and winning game 6 before dropping game 7 on the road in Cleveland.

2023-24 Regular Season Game Log

During the regular season, the Magic put together a nine-game win streak between November 15 and December 2. This was the first nine-game win streak since the 2010-11 Orlando season.

The 2023-24 season was the first NBA season with an in-season tournament. The Magic won 3 of 4 games marked as in-season tournament games, but the early loss to the Brooklyn Nets prevented the squad from advancing to the deeper rounds of the tournament.
