The Magic’s 2024-25 Regular Season

first 5 games: A Strong Start Led by Banchero

The Orlando Magic came out with a ferocious start to begin the season at full strength led by their dynamic duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. The Magic opened up with an impressive 19-point victory over the Miami Heat in the season opener.

Banchero kicked off the season with All-NBA numbers, averaging 29 points per game over the first five games of the season including a stunning 50-point performance against Indiana.

The Magic won 3 of the first 5 games of the season, but lost Banchero in game no. 5 to a torn oblique injury.

Games 6 – 25: The Franz Show

With running mate Paolo Banchero out, Franz Wagner showed the Magic fans what he is capable of by being the number 1 option on the team. Without Paolo on the floor, Franz averaged 26.1 points per game during this stretch. The Magic took care of business winning 13 of the 20 games, including a stretch of winning 12 of 13.

Despite the supreme disappointment of not having Paolo Banchero for much of the early season, the Magic looked like they could weather the storm as a result of Franz Wagner. Unfortunately, on December 6, Franz Wagner also suffered a torn oblique (same injury as Paolo) and would not miss multiple weeks at a minimum of play.

Games 26 – 39 : PLAYING FOR SURVIVAL

Starting with the Phoenix game on December 8, 2024, the Orlando Magic have had to play with a much diminished roster, not just without their two superstar forwards in Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero, but Jalen Suggs missed a couple games and Moe Wagner went down on December 21 against Miami with a torn ACL.

Despite the injuries, other Magic teammates stepped up with impressive performances by Goga Bitadze, Tristan Da Silva and Cole Anthony. Additionally, the Magic pulled off multiple dramatic comebacks against teams such as the Heat and the Nets, fighting for every win.

Games 40-45: PAOLO’s back, but that’s it

After missing 34 games, Paolo Banchero returned to the Orlando Magic against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 10, 2024. While the Magic lost the game, his return was nothing short of spectacular, scoring 34 points in less than 27 minutes of play. Banchero will have his opportunity to put the team on his shoulders while he awaits the return of running mate Franz Wagner.

Unfortunately, the team still mightily struggled with injuries, with Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs, Goga Bitadze and others missing extended time.

Games 46-: PAOLO & FRANZ REUNITED

Finally, Magic fans have had the chance to see their two young stars reunited on the court for the first time since the first five games of the 2024-25 season.

Memorable Regular Season Moments

Oct 28, 2024 – Paolo scores 50

Paolo Banchero hit the 50 mark in just the fourth game of the season against the Indiana Pacers. Paolo scored 37 points in the first half tying Tracy McGrady’s record for scoring in a half. Paolo slowed down in the second half, but was able to hit 50 while even more importantly, securing the win for the good guys. See video and stats from this night.

NOV 21, 2024 – Franz game-winNING Three in l.a.

Franz Wagner put up a career performance on the road against Lebron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. Without running mate Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner led the team with 37 points including a down-two, game-winning three point shot from deep. See video and stats from the game here.

Dec 8, 2024 – DOWN TWO OBLIQUES, 10-0 AT HOME

With Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero both sidelined with torn oblique muscles (what the heck?), Jalen Suggs led the Orlando Magic toward an emotional victory to stay undefeated on the home court against the Phoenix Suns. See video and stats from the Orlando vs. Phoenix game.

DEC 21, 2024 – BATTERED MAGIC PULL OFF HISTORIC COMEBACK AGAINST HEAT

The Magic were the first team in the NBA in five seasons to pull off a comeback in which the team was down at least 22 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Magic outscored the Heat 37-8 in a lopsided fourth quarter to secure the comeback victory. The last time the Magic trailed by 25 points in a game and won was back during the 1989 season. See video and stats from the Orlando vs. Miami game.

January 10, 2024 – PAOLO’S RETURN

After missing the lsat 34 games with a torn oblique, Paolo Banchero returned to action against the Milwaukee Bucks, scoring 34 points in 26:32 time on the court. The return of Banchero was an exciting and thrilling moment for Magic fans, and the all-star forward delivered big time with his first performance back. The Magic lost the game, but positivity reigned supreme as fans know the future is bright.

JANUARY 25, 2024 – PAOLO & FRANZ BOTH GO FOR 32, FRANZ TIES 4TH QUARTER RECORD

In an exciting game, just two games into Franz Wagner’s return, the young Magic duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner delivered an impressive combined performance – each scoring 32 points – in an exciting win against the Detroit Pistons. While Franz got off to a rough start, he scored 25 points in the 4th quarter, tying the Orlando Magic record for most points scored in a 4th quarter.

Orlando Magic in the 2024 NBA Cup

The Orlando Magic played in the 2nd annual NBA Cup during the early part of the 2024-25 NBA season. The Magic were a part of the Eastern Group which included the New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets. The Magic came close to winning their group, but were knocked out in the 4th game by the New York Knicks. However, because Orlando had the next best record and point differential of all eastern conference teams that did not win their group, they advanced as the wildcard to the knockout stage for the first time.

The Orlando Magic were knocked out of the 2024 NBA Cup by the Milwaukee Bucks in a December 10, 2024 matchup on Milwaukee’s home court. Despite not having both Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero (as well as Jonathan Isaac), the Magic played a competitive game and lost by a score of 114-109.
